Car Seat Safety Checks

Child safety seats are a critical part in protecting young children during travel in vehicles. Selecting a seat that corresponds to the child's age and size, and ensuring it is installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications, is essential. Proper installation decreases the likelihood of injury or fatality in the event of a collision. Additionally, caregivers must verify that the child is securely fastened, with harness straps adjusted to provide a firm and safe fit.

Here are some key facts about why it's important to have a child in a car seat:

  1. Saves Lives: Car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers in passenger vehicles (CDC).

  2. Designed for Their Size: Car seats are specifically engineered to protect a child's smaller body and developing bones better than a standard seatbelt.

  3. Prevents Ejection: In a crash, unrestrained children can be ejected from the vehicle, which is often fatal. A properly installed car seat keeps them secure.

  4. Required by Law: All 50 states require car seats for young children. Not using one can result in fines, points on your license, or even child endangerment charges.

  5. Reduces Injuries: Even in minor crashes, car seats help protect a child from serious head, neck, and spinal injuries.

  6. Correct Fit is Crucial: Adult seat belts can cause serious injuries to small children if not used with a booster or car seat.

  7. Car Seats Work Best When Used Right: According to NHTSA, nearly half of car seats are used incorrectly, which can lessen their effectiveness—education matters.
